Since beginning his lobbying career four decades ago, William J. Mueller has built a reputation as “the best” in Nebraska’s legal and government relations field. Among his many accolades,
Bill is the former president of the Nebraska State Bar Association and has been named a fellow of the Nebraska State Bar Foundation and a Benefactor Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He has also been granted lifetime membership in America’s Top 100 Attorneys. He has been recognized since 2009 by his peers as a Best Lawyer in America and a Great Plains Super Lawyer in government relations. In the following Q&A, we learn more about his career, including how he merges his legal and political expertise as senior partner and co-founder of Mueller Robak to deliver positive outcomes for clients:
What does a typical day at Mueller Robak look like for you?
There is no such thing as a typical day in the life of a lobbyist, especially during the legislative session. During these periods, we spend our time at the Nebraska State Capitol, meeting with senators and their teams to advocate on issues of interest to our clients. Otherwise, we are busy meeting with clients, legislators, and their staffers to plan for the upcoming session.
Mueller Robak is consistently ranked among the nation’s best law firms for its government relations practice. What do you believe is the secret to the firm’s success?
Everyone at our firm is laser-focused on professionalism and hard work. We represent our clients zealously. Our word is our bond!
You represent businesses, professional organizations, trade associations, and many others. What do you consider the firm’s specialties?
Mueller Robak is fortunate to represent clients in nearly every industry. We do not specialize in any one substantive area. Instead, we consider ourselves experts on many issues of interest to our clients.
You are actively involved in Nebraska-based organizations, from the United Way to the Nebraska State Bar Association to the University of Nebraska Alumni Association. Why is giving back to your home state such a priority?
I enjoy getting to know people and being involved in organizations that work to improve our communities and help those in need. I’ve found that I get much more out of my service than I contribute. The world is run by those who show up, so I make a concerted effort to do just that.
You serve on NASL’s board of directors and as vice-chair of the long-range planning and lobbying profession committee. What are the benefits of being a part of this group?
I love NASL, the professionals who created it, and those still actively involved. I’m continuously learning from these government relations professionals who are the best in their states. By being involved in NASL, we make each other better at what we do!
