SWODA’s Transportation Reimbursement Initiative Program (TRIP) helps rural Oklahomans pay for transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, food banks, and other essential services. Since launching in April, the program has grown rapidly, providing more than $71,000 in mileage reimbursements and helping hundreds of residents overcome transportation barriers. Funded through a five-year federal rural health initiative, TRIP is especially important for people who must travel long distances for healthcare or struggle to afford transportation. SWODA hopes to expand the program, develop volunteer driver networks, and find long-term funding to continue improving healthcare access and quality of life in rural communities.
Oklahoma Sen. Paul Rosino is proposing a major overhaul of the state’s child welfare system by creating a new Department of Child Safety and Wellbeing.Rosino argues that the Department of Human Services manages too many programs to give child welfare the attention it needs, so his plan would bring several child-focused services together under one agency. He believes the change could improve worker training, pay, coordination, and outcomes for vulnerable children without significantly increasing costs. After a similar bill stalled last year, Rosino and Senate leaders are working with the House to make the proposal a priority this session.
Oklahoma law enforcement partnerships with ICE led to more than 1,800 immigration-related arrests from January through July 2026, a significant increase from previous years. Data from the Deportation Data Project shows that fewer than 20% of those arrested had a criminal conviction, though the Department of Homeland Security disputes those findings. More than 110 Oklahoma agencies participate in ICE’s 287(g) program, allowing local officers to assist with federal immigration enforcement. Supporters argue these partnerships strengthen law enforcement and public safety, while the arrest data shows that most people detained had no prior criminal convictions.
Public Service Company of Oklahoma customers are reporting sharp increases in their electric bills while the Oklahoma Corporation Commission considers the utility’s rate case. PSO implemented an interim increase of about $25 per month for an average customer after the commission did not reach a decision within the required 180-day period. If regulators approve a lower final rate, customers will receive credits over time for the difference they paid. The commission is still reviewing evidence and testimony, while customers can submit written public comments about the case.
Former Oklahoma lawmaker Mark McBride is suing Gov. Kevin Stitt over his decision to call a special election for State Question 848, which would ask voters whether to hold a constitutional convention. McBride argues that Stitt does not have the authority to call the election without going through the Legislature and is improperly using taxpayer money to prepare for it. Legislative leaders and Attorney General Gentner Drummond have also raised concerns about Stitt’s actions, with Drummond calling the move illegal. Stitt’s office maintains that the governor acted to give Oklahomans a constitutionally required opportunity to vote on a convention after 56 years without one.
